How to sell more online in Egypt

Not shipping tips - the lessons we see every day across thousands of merchants: building a brand customers trust, handling “I need to try it first”, and fixing shipping that costs more than the product.

The golden ruleThe Egyptian customer doesn’t reject the product - they reject the risk. Every tip in this course has one goal: reduce the customer’s feeling that they might lose their money or their time.

Chapter 01 · Trust = higher conversion

Build a brand customers trust

Trust isn’t a pretty logo. It’s the signals a customer reads in the first 30 seconds on your page.

Real photos, not stolen onesShoot your own, with one steady background and light. If a customer finds your photo on 5 other pages, their trust drops instantly.
Clear, written policiesExchange, returns, delivery time and shipping fees - written on a fixed page, not buried in a comment reply.
Reply fastReplying within 15 minutes sharply raises the chance of a sale. Save ready WhatsApp replies for repeated questions.
Real customer reviewsScreenshots of customer chats and photos of your product on them. Customer content beats any paid ad.
A consistent identitySame logo, same colours and same tone everywhere - social, website and packaging. Repetition builds memory.
Post-purchase experienceA confirmation message, a tracking link and a thank-you card. A customer who knows where their order is doesn’t call to complain.
Account manager tip: packaging is the easiest trust-builder. A clean, branded box makes customers photograph and share the order - a free ad that brings you new customers.
Chapter 02 · The #1 cause of returns

“I need to try it on first”

Couriers can’t wait while a customer tries on - they carry 40 shipments a day, and once a parcel is opened there’s no proof of its condition. The fix isn’t convincing the courier; it’s removing the need to try on at all.

Size chart in centimetresNot just S, M and L - write chest, length and sleeve in cm for every size. This alone cuts refusals noticeably.
“Measure a piece you own”Teach customers to measure a T-shirt that fits them and compare - far easier than measuring their body.
Model details“Model is 175 cm, 70 kg and wears L.” This one line answers half of all size questions.
A 15-second product videoThe piece being worn and moving, plus a close-up of the fabric. Video replaces the feel of touching and trying.
Size advice before confirmingOn the confirmation call, ask their height, weight and usual size - and recommend one. The responsibility is now yours, and the customer relaxes.
Offer a size exchange“Free size exchange within 14 days.” It removes the fear completely and costs far less than a full return.
How to reply to “I need to try it with the courier”
“Sorry, you can’t try it - that’s the courier’s policy.”
“So you don’t waste your time, tell me your height and weight and I’ll pick your exact size. If it doesn’t fit, exchange it free within 14 days.”
Chapter 03 · An average-order-value problem

“Shipping is too expensive for this price”

If you sell a 150 EGP product with 70 EGP shipping, the problem isn’t the shipping price - it’s your small average order. Delivery costs about the same for one piece or four, so your job is to grow the order, not shrink the shipping.

Same customer, three ways to show the price
Worst150 EGP + 70 shippingShipping is 47% of the product
Better205 EGP, shipping includedNo surprises
Best3 pieces for 399, free shippingHigher profit, shipping paid once
A free-shipping thresholdSet it about 30% above your current average order. If your average is 200, make shipping free over 270 - customers add a piece to save it.
Bundles instead of single pieces“3 pieces for 399, shipping on us.” Bundles raise the order value and shrink shipping as a share of it.
Include shipping in the price150 + 70 shipping feels expensive. 205 including shipping feels cheaper. Same money, a completely different feeling.
Free shipping for prepaid ordersCustomers who pay online rarely refuse delivery. Take shipping off for them and you get fewer returns and faster cash.
Suggest before checkout“Add 45 EGP more for free shipping,” with two small suggested products. The strongest tool for raising average order value.
Show shipping from the startThe worst thing is a customer discovering shipping at the last step. Put it on the product page - a checkout surprise loses the basket.
Chapter 04 · The most important chapter

Your real profit per order

Most merchants calculate profit on the successful order and forget that a return doesn’t just come back empty - you paid shipping both ways and the ad cost, for zero revenue. Do the maths properly and you’ll find that cutting returns is the cheapest way to grow profit.

Worked example: 10 orders, 2 returned
WrongSale 300 - product 150 - shipping 6090 EGP profit per order
Right8 orders × 90 = 720 - 120 return shipping - 400 ads200 EGP total = 20 EGP per order
Average order valueTotal sales ÷ number of orders.
Return rateReturns ÷ shipments. Healthy is below 15%.
Customer acquisition costAd spend ÷ number of orders.
Profit marginReal profit ÷ sales.
The takeaway: cut returns from two orders to one and your profit jumps from 200 to 400 EGP - double, without selling more or spending more on ads. Review these four numbers at the end of every month; if returns are above 20%, stop increasing ad spend until you fix it.
Chapter 05 · Fewer returns, faster cash

Get customers to pay upfront

A customer who paid online has already decided - their refusal rate is far lower than cash on delivery. You won’t convert everyone overnight, but every 10% you convert cuts returns and speeds up your money.

Give a clear reason“Free shipping if you pay online” or 5% off. Customers need a real benefit, not just an option.
Reassure them about their moneyPut the refund policy next to the pay button, and make it clear they get a full refund if the product doesn’t match.
Offer every methodCard, mobile wallet and InstaPay. Every missing method means customers who fall back to cash or abandon the basket.
Start with difficult zonesAsk for prepayment or a small deposit in high-return areas - cheaper than a full return.
A deposit on big ordersFor orders over 1,000 EGP, ask for 100 EGP upfront. It filters out non-serious customers completely.
The double effectPrepayment cuts returns and puts money in your hands before you ship - your capital turns faster, with less risk.
Chapter 06 · Higher demand, less competition

Grow beyond Cairo and Alexandria

Advertising in Cairo costs more because every merchant is fighting for the same audience. Upper Egypt and the Delta have customers buying online with fewer choices, so conversion is often higher - as long as you enter with a plan, not at random.

1Pick one governorate to startMansoura, Assiut or Tanta. One governorate for a month beats five at once.
2Know the shipping cost and timeAsk your account manager before you advertise, and price on that basis.
3Write the real delivery time3 or 4 days written honestly beats an unrealistic “48 hours” - a wrong promise creates returns.
4Confirm new-region orders by phoneIn the first month, confirm every order by voice and pin the address with a landmark.
5Speak the region’s languageAn ad that says “We deliver to Assiut” performs better than a general ad for all of Egypt.
6Measure after 30 days, then decideDelivery rate and acquisition cost. Better than Cairo? Scale up. Worse? Learn and try another governorate.
Chapter 07 · Seasons reward planning

Prepare for each season a month ahead

In peak seasons everything moves faster: stock runs out, pickups get busier and customers are in a hurry. The merchant who wins the season is the one who prepared before it, not the one running after it.

Ramadan & EidDemand moves to gifts and new clothes. Prepare stock before Sha’ban, set a last order date for delivery before Eid and show it on your site.
Black FridayNo need for deep discounts. Use bundles and gifts with orders, and message past customers two days before the public campaign.
Back to school & winterPredictable, dated seasons. Prepare stock in August, and winter stock in October before the first cold wave.
Double the stock of your top 3 productsTell SIDEUP your expected shipment volumeOrder extra flyers and packagingAssign an extra person to reply to messagesUpdate the delivery time on your siteSwitch to daily pickups, not every other day
Important: tell your account manager your expected volume two weeks before the season, so pickup times and capacity are arranged without delays.
Chapter 08 · Discounts are the last resort

Escape the price war

If price is your only weapon, anyone with more money than you will win. Customers will pay more when they feel they’re getting more value - and value isn’t always in the product.

Bundles instead of discounts“Two pieces, the third at half price” protects your product’s value and raises the order - unlike discounts that eat your margin and train customers to wait for sales.
Compete on experienceFaster delivery, free exchange and clear tracking are real reasons to buy - and cost less than a permanent discount on every order.
Packaging as added valueA clean box and a thank-you card cost a few pounds, and make customers remember you and share their order. No discount does that.
Talk about the differenceExplain the fabric, the stitching and why your product costs more than the cheapest one. Customers won’t see the difference if you don’t show it.
A premium product lineLaunch a better, pricier version next to your core product. It makes the core look like a great deal - and some customers will buy the premium one.
Own your customersA customer list and repeat-purchase campaigns mean you don’t depend entirely on ads - your biggest edge over competitors who pay for every order.
Chapter 09 · Save time and money

AI tools that work like a full team

You don’t need a photographer, a designer or a customer-service hire from day one. These tools do a team’s work at a small cost - as long as you use them in the right place.

Product photosPhotoroom · Pebblely · Flair AIShoot on your phone; the tool removes the background and places it in a professional scene.

Two warnings: never change how the product looks with AI - if the photo is nicer than what arrives, that’s a guaranteed return. And AI speeds up work that already works; it won’t fix a weak product or chaotic operations. If your returns are 30%, the problem isn’t your tools.

Quick tips from your account manager

Confirm every order before shippingOne call or WhatsApp message before creating the shipment cuts returns sharply. An unconfirmed order is your most expensive order.
Old customers are cheaper than new onesA coupon for past customers costs far less than an ad to find a new one. Build a customer list and use it.
Know your four numbersAverage order, return rate, acquisition cost and profit margin. Any decision without them is a guess.
Let your delivery data decideSIDEUP shows delivery and return rates for every governorate and area. If one area returns more, ask for prepayment there or confirm its orders twice - and scale ads where delivery is strongest.
Write descriptions that sellMaterial, use and what makes it better than cheaper options. “100% cotton that won’t shrink after washing” beats “100% cotton”.
Your COD cycle is part of your strategyThe faster your money comes back, the more stock you can buy and the more you can advertise. Set your payout cycle in the portal.
